Brain Drain or Brain Gain?

We have all felt it. That where am I feeling of managing too many things at once. And none of us is perfect, nor do we need to be. This is the only brain I am ever going to have, and I want it to work really well for a long, long time.

So, what can we do to grow and health the brain?

Fun facts about your brain:

+ Our brains consume 20% of our metabolism.

+ eating a lot of sugar increases risk for mood disorders like depression

+ 95% of the serotonin (happy hormone) is produced in the GUT not the brain. So having a healthy happy microbiome in the gut is essential for happiness.

+ Your brain is 60% fat. So a low fat diet is starving your brain.

What can we do? Healthy lifestyle tips for optimum brain health.

+ Your brain needs water! If you've ever had a hang-over you know this to be true. That headache is because your brain is no longer floating happily in your cranium. The goal is 1/2 your body weight in ounces everyday. If your urine is clear, you are doing a good job.

+ Sleep! I learned a long time ago that dreaming is essential to our mental state. People who don't dream and dump the mental "trash" of the day are prone to psychosis. What I just learned is that our brains clean our the toxic byproducts of daily function when we sleep. And when we are sleep deprived, the cells in charge of detox actually go into overdrive and start cleaning up healthy brain cells too! Yikes!
